The exhibition the afterlives of things: re-engaging teaching collections opened on Thursday 25 September 2025 at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Visual Arts (CVA).
The exhibition features artworks from the teaching collections of the CVA as well as the KZNM’s Departments of Natural and Human Sciences, and UKZN student and staff work that responds creatively to those objects.
This exhibition asks: what is the role of the teaching collection today? How might we bring dormant collections back to life, and what possibilities emerge when they are reanimated through mindful touching, teaching, and creative practice?
All are welcome to visit the exhibition from Friday 26 September to Friday 3 October 2025 (safe off-street parking available, gates M11 and M12 in Ridge Road).

The exhibition is organized in the context of the annual SAVAH (South African Visual Arts Historians) conference 25–27 September 2025.
