Sawubona / I See You: A Photographic Album of People with Intellectual Disability by Rory du Plessis
The KwaZulu-Natal Museum is proud to host Sawubona / I See You, a moving exhibition by Rory du Plessis.
This exhibition reflects on the dehumanisation of patients at the Grahamstown Lunatic Asylum between the 1890s and 1907, where people with intellectual disability were dismissed as bearing an “awful curse.”
Through the powerful combination of photographs, poetry, and biography, Sawubona / I See You seeks to restore dignity and personhood to those long forgotten. It invites us to reflect on important questions: What makes us human? How do we restore humanity to these patients by looking into the souls of 26 photographs that remain as witnesses to their lives?
We invite you to experience this thought-provoking exhibition at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum.
