New Temporary Exhibition Launches 18 July 2024: Americaโs Voices Against Apartheid
The KwaZulu-Natal Museum, in partnership with the Consulate General of the United States in Durban, is excited to present the exhibition "Americaโs Voices Against Apartheid."
Developed with the National African American Drug Policy Coalition (NAADPC) and the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, and funded by the U.S. Mission to South Africa, this much-anticipated exhibition will be on display starting 18 July 2024, and will be up for a year.
Explore the deep ties between African Americans and Black South Africans, spanning over 150 years, that formed the foundation of anti-apartheid activism in the United States. Discover the similarities between the oppression faced by African Americans under Jim Crow laws and Black South Africans under apartheid, and learn about the significant contributions of American activists who opposed apartheid and fought for racial equality both at home and abroad.
A special feature includes a film showcasing the role of artists in the anti-apartheid movement, with footage of Winston Ntshona and John Kani's Tony Award acceptance in 1975, and Stevie van Zandt's powerful speech at Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday concert in 1988.
