The KwaZulu-Natal Museum mourns the loss of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, an iconic figure whose significant contributions to South Africa's political landscape and the preservation of Zulu cultural history have left an indelible mark across the nation.
Prince Buthelezi, a luminary in KwaZulu-Natal and the founder of the Inkatha Freedom Party, is cherished by people from all walks of life for his remarkable political journey and his role as Traditional Prime Minister to three Zulu Kings; King Cyprian Bhekuzulu kaPhumuzuzulu, King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, and the current King, King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, whose installation he greatly contributed to in August 2022 following the passing of King Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu and Queen MaDlamini Zulu in 2021. His legacy will be an enduring source of inspiration, shaping the history of the Zulu Nation for generations to come.
Recognizing Prince Buthelezi's immense impact on the restoration and preservation of Zulu history, KwaZulu-Natal Museum is dedicated to upholding his legacy for future generations. The Museum conducted an extensive interview with Prince Buthelezi on March 29, 2023, covering various aspects of his life, politics, his role as Prime Minister of the Zulu Kingdom, and the installation of Zulu Kings, among other topics. Prince Buthelezi maintained a strong rapport with the KwaZulu-Natal Museum, making frequent visits whenever the opportunity arose.
While Prince Buthelezi's passing leaves a deep void, his legacy will endure through the cherished stories, artefacts, and memories we hold dear.
