Celebrating museums and the crucial role they play as educational institutions in society during the KZN Dept. of Sport, Arts, and Culture's, International Museum Day (IMD) event, held at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site on Friday, 16 May.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for KZN Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr Mntomuhle Khawula called on museums to heed the #IMD2025 theme, "𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒆𝒖𝒎𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑹𝒂𝒑𝒊𝒅𝒍𝒚 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔" and secure the of future of museums by being more accessible, embracing innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability in order to adapt to the rapidly changing needs of society.

Happy International Museums Day!

2025 marks the 40th anniversary of celebrating museums and the essential role they play as educational spaces that preserve heritage and strengthen communities.

This year’s #IMD theme, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒆𝒖𝒎𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑹𝒂𝒑𝒊𝒅𝒍𝒚 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔, challenges museums to adapt to societal changes and actively shape sustainable and inclusive communities. In alignment with 3 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the theme calls on museums to;

𝐒𝐃𝐆 𝟖: Support local economies by creating employment opportunities and offering educational programs that empower communities.

𝐒𝐃𝐆 𝟗: Foster creativity and embrace technological advancements, to drive innovation and enhance accessibility.

𝐒𝐃𝐆 𝟏𝟏: Contribute to sustainable urban development by acting as cultural hubs that promote inclusion, resilience, and heritage preservation.

A powerful moment of learning, history, and connection as the KwaZulu-Natal Museum welcomed Dr. Jean Bailey and her team, all the way from the USA!

The collective, who are responsible for the 𝑨𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝑽𝒐𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒔 𝑨𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕 𝑨𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒅 exhibition, an exhibition that explores the solidarity between African Americans and black South Africans over the last 150 years with a focus on the apartheid period, visited the Museum with Ohlange High School over the weekend.

Ohlange High School, which is based in Inanda, Durban, is steeped in South African history, as it was founded by John Dube in 1901 and was the historic school where Nelson Mandela cast his first ever vote during South Africa's 1994 elections.

As part of their visit, the group hosted an inspiring activity session with Grade 11 and 12 History learners from Ohlange High School. These activities were based on the three major themes of the exhibition, 1. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝑆ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐼𝑑𝑒𝑎𝑠 𝑎𝑐𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑠 𝑎𝑛 𝑂𝑐𝑒𝑎𝑛, 2. The KwaZulu-Natal Museum celebrated International Day for Biological Diversity under the theme, "𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒚 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑵𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕," paying special focus on the role of modern technology and Artificial Intelligence in Biological Diversity.

Environmental stakeholders comprising of Wildlands (WildTrust), UKZN School of Life Sciences , Sappi Southern Africa , GroundTruth , Institute of Natural Resources , along with the Museum's Natural Science Department delivered insightful and interactive presentations on biodiversity and engaged learners from 7 local schools with a hands-on session, showcasing the role of modern technology/AI in Biological Diversity and how these technologies are ustilised within their respective institutions and fields for the betterment of our biodiversity.

The day's activities underscored the importance of biodiversity to life on Earth and illustrated just how valuable a tool technology is in the enhancement of biodiversity conservation and the fight against wildlife crime.

By combining innovation with conservation, we can create smarter, more effective ways to protect and sustain Earth’s biodiversity for generations to come.
