The 89th South African Museums Association (SAMA) 2025 National Conference is currently taking place in The City of Tshwane, under the theme, "๐บ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ญ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ป๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ช๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐น๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐." The theme places emphasis on three important pillars: Cultural Preservation, Digital Innovation and Environmental Sustainability, and how harmonising these key pillars will aid museums and heritage sites to adapt to rapid technological advancements and environmental challenges, revitalising their relevance and accessibility to the public.
This year, the KwaZulu-Natal Museum is represented by Dr Ghilraen Laue, Matabaro Ziganira, Thando Malevu, Anele Bhengu, Mudzunga Munzhedzi, and Dr Justine Winjtes (Online participant). During the first day of the conference, Mudzunga Munzhedzi, Collections Technician at the Museum's Human Sciences Department, gave a presentation titled, "๐ช๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐๐๐: ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐๐-๐ต๐๐๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐
๐ฌ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ต๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐๐." The presentation outlined the benefits of institutional collaborations, citing a recent collaboration between the KZN Museum and the Eswatini National Museum, where the Museum's Human Sciences Department provided curatorial, collections care and conservation training to a museum curator and conservator from the Eswatini National Museum.
