The Special Collection comprises rare copies of southern African rock art, maps, photographs, slides, rare paper documents as well as historical firearms that have been disabled. The items in this collection cover the same three fields of the other collections—archaeology, anthropology and history—but require special curation and conservation because of the nature of the materials. Notable parts of this collection include over 30,000 photographic images, the Vinnicombe Archive with over 370 copies of San rock art, the earliest surviving copies of rock paintings in the Drakensberg, and rock art pieces removed from sites in the Drakensberg for various reasons.
