Here are some interesting facts about South African languages:

1. South Africa has 11 official languages and ranks 3rd behind Zimbabwe (16) and Bolivia (37).

2. Afrikaans is one of the youngest languages in the world and was recognised as an official language during the 20th century.

3. isiZulu is the most commonly spoken home language in South Africa with 1 out of 4 people speaking the language. isXhosa is the second most common home language with 16% of users,

followed by Afrikaans with 13.5% and Sesotho sa Leboa 7.6%.

4. English is the main language of communication in South Africa however, only 1 out of 10 South Africans speak English as a home language.

Besihambele endaweni yakwa Swayimane siyobheka ukuthi imiphi imisundu etholakala kumoba wakulendawo ngokusizwa ubaba uMdunge womnyango wezolimo, ongumlimi kulendawo.

Siyile kwa Nomnganga, Ndlaveleni kanye nase Mabheleni. Emabheleni kulapho ke sithole ugogo nomkhulu Khanyile abanabazukulu abaye beza nabo kuthina bezofuna ukwazi ukuthi senzani, bebuza nesizathu sokuqoqa lemisundu yakubo. On this day in 1990, former President Nelson Mandela is released from Victor Verster prison following 27 years of imprisonment.

The release of Nelson Mandela came 8 days after then-President, FW De Klerk, announced the unbanning of the ANC and other political parties along with the release of Mandela in a speech given at the opening of parliament on the 2nd of February 1990.

Addressing hundreds of people at the Cape Town, City Hall, Nelson Mandela concluded his first public address by quoting his own words from when he stood trial in 1964, stating that the words were as true that day as they were when he first spoke them in 1964.

Mandela stated, “I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But, if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”
