New Encyclopaedia Entry by Dr Ghilraen Laue

The second edition of the Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology, edited by Claire Smith, is in the process of being published. Dr Ghilraen Laue, Museum Human Sciences Department, contributed an article titled Rock Art in Southern Africa, Regional Difference. Laue investigates the often ignored topic of regional difference in southern African Rock Art, concentrating on differences between the art in Maloti-Drakensberg Mountains and the southern and Western Cape. This compendium will be available both online and as a printed version.

Volunteer wins prestigious bursary

Congratulations to Angela Ferreira, a volunteer in the Department of Human Sciences during 2019, on receiving the prestigious Harry Crossley Bursary, which is awarded to students of exceptional academic merit. Angela, who has been working on digital photogrammetry of rock art, historical archives, and on Khoisan community identities while at the museum will use the bursary to study her Masters degree at the University of Cape Town. She will be writing her dissertation under the guidance of Professor Carolyn Hamilton, who is the director of the renowned Archive and Public Culture Initiative. Angela will research how concepts of Khoisan identity have changed over time. Sadly, this means that Angela will be leaving the museum so that she can spend her time working on her research. The KZN Museum wishes her all the best for her future career.

Talk by Chrissie Sievers on Saturday, February 15th at 10:30 am at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum, 237 Jabu Ndlovu Street, Pietermaritzburg

Chrissie Sievers lectures in Archaeobotany at Wits University. Her special interest is in identifying the when, how and what of plant use in antiquity. In addition to regular archaeological fieldwork, she devises various experiments to determine how plant remains became incorporated in archaeological deposits, and how they might have been affected by later occupations of archaeological sites.

Although starchy geophytes (roots, tubers, rhizomes) are seldom preserved archaeologically, at Border Cave they have been excavated from ashy layers at least 170 000 years old. By comparing the external shape and the internal vascular structure of the ancient remains with many modern geophytes, we were able to identify the Border Cave rhizomes as belonging to the genus Hypoxis (star flower). They are probably Hypoxis angustifolia, which are small white-fleshed edible geophytes widely distributed in southern Africa and beyond, and would have provided a food staple. Their presence at Border Cave also tells us about the social behaviour of our species, Homo sapiens, in the Middle Stone Age.

Dr Gavin Whitelaw, Chief Curator in the Human Sciences Department, is a co-editor of a book on cognitive archaeology published by Routledge in early 2020. The book comprises 13 contributions that cover African and American material principally. The contributors include well-known archaeologists from Europe, North America and Africa. The book is a useful compilation for any scholar interested in how to go about studying symbolic thinking in the past through the use of ethnographic sources. The book is available in both printed and electronic formats. The full reference is:
