In honour of His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, the KwaZulu-Natal Museum management has taken a decision to close the Museum to members of the public on Thursday 18 March 2021.

King Zwelithini has shown exemplary leadership in the promotion of our heritage. He supported the KZN Museum in two important projects that helped to promote the profile of the KZN Museum while raising awareness about the rich heritage of KwaZulu-Natal.

King Zwelithini cared for the wellness and upliftment of the youth by developing and supporting projects that promoted employment opportunities for young people and the development of rural areas.

The KZN Museum pays tribute to the many achievements that the King made during his almost 50-year reign. As a national heritage institution, the KZN Museum will continue to develop and promote programmes and projects that raise awareness about our heritage and promote nation building and social cohesion.

The KwaZulu-Natal Museums collaborative International Biodiversity Day event with DUCT saw 40 learners participate in the initiative on Friday, 21 May 2021. The initiative was designed to celebrate and drive the importance of #biodiversity through practical educational activities that reinforce the grade 10 and 11 Life Sciences CAPs Syllabus. Learners from Ngangezwe High School, Inhlanhlayabebhuze High School and Banqobile High School were given a presentation by members of DUCT, highlighting the threats of climate change on biodiversity and how to take better care of the environment. Students were given a guided tour of the Museum, focusing on three biodiversity habitats grasslands, forests and marine. With the knowledge gained from the tour, each school was tasked with creating its own miniature habitats.

Isiqalo Youth Development held a Career’s Day Expo, focused on assisting grade 12 learners with their future career aspirations. The KZN Museum was invited to talk about the different career paths available within the museum as well as to showcase how it uses its outreach programmes to empower different communities in and around Pietermaritzburg. The latest of these programmes is a tutorial on how to make hand soap and sanitiser at home, which the learners got to experience first-hand.

Climate change is regarded as one of the biggest threats faced by humanity in recent history. Climate action failure ranked second behind infectious diseases on the World Economic Forum's, Global Risk Report of 2021. The report ranked the threats based on the impact they have on the population.

In light of World Earth Day, we will be highlighting various ways that the climate is impacted through human behaviour and the role nature plays in combating climate change.
