The Exhibitions department regularly measures temperatures, light and relative humidity in the galleries to provide a representation of the environmental conditions. Pietermaritzburg has a warm temperature climate and average temperatures for the safety of artefacts and for the comfort of staff and visitors should range from 18'c-24'c, with a relative humidity of 45%-65%.

#Didyouknow that the KwaZulu-Natal Museum is home to one of South Africa’s largest specialist research libraries?

The library has steadily built up its extensive collections since the early years of the museum in 1851. The collections specialise in fields such as Arotropical Entomology (Diptera), Indo-Pacific Mollusca, African Lower Invertebrates, African Arachnology and Herpetology, South African Archaeology (KZN stone and iron ages), and KZN cultural history just to mention a few. The main aim of the library is to develop and preserve the library's collections, whilst providing professional library services to serve the scientific needs of the community.

The library is open to the public during museum operating hours, Monday to Friday, 9h00 - 15h30.

In order for the world to better understand climatic changes, things like Species Distribution Models (SMDs) are mostly used to understand what we call environmental controls. The data used in such models must be of best quality.

Institutions like the Museums are useful sources for past and present data for many species, while this is appreciated, they do not always include accurate geographic co-ordinates in their data.

One of my jobs as a Data Technician is Georeferencing (providing accurate co-ordinates), which means that actual locations must be properly Georeferenced. This is done by using programmes like GeoLocate, QGIS and Google Earth to get location co-ordinates.

Once the co-ordinates are obtained they are entered into a data management programme called Specify to update the records.
