Because of the ongoing global pandemic, the KwaZulu-Natal Museum took the initiative to put up relevant and informative signs in the courtyard area in the History Hall about COVID-19 and the history of the vaccine.

On display we have one of our granny mannequins self-isolating in her cottage as our seniors are more vulnerable to the virus and need to be protected.

The Museum recognizes the need to educate our visitors about Covid-19 and how to best protect ourselves and the people around us.

Come visit us at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum, there’s always something new to see. We are open from Monday to Friday between 9h00 till 15h30.

In order for the world to better understand climatic changes, things like Species Distribution Models (SMDs) are mostly used to understand what we call environmental controls. The data used in such models must be of best quality.

Institutions like the Museums are useful sources for past and present data for many species, while this is appreciated, they do not always include accurate geographic co-ordinates in their data.

One of my jobs as a Data Technician is Georeferencing (providing accurate co-ordinates), which means that actual locations must be properly Georeferenced. This is done by using programmes like GeoLocate, QGIS and Google Earth to get location co-ordinates.

Once the co-ordinates are obtained they are entered into a data management programme called Specify to update the records.

We are happy to officially open to the public as of the 4th of January 2021. We can’t wait to see you back in the Museum immersing yourself in our beautiful galleries. Under alert level 3 the Museums operating hours will remain the same, opening at 9h00 and closing 15h30 from Monday to Friday. As per COVID-19 regulations we will only have a limited number of visitors at a time in the Museum, no visitors will be allowed inside the Museum without a mask and visitors will be screened upon entry, your safety is our main priority.
