KZN Museum celebrated Africa Day at the Museum on the 31 May at a joyous and colourful celebration of diversity. The learners came dressed up in traditional clothes and sang and danced and filled the hall with an air of festivity. Primary schools were invited to participate in a programme at the Museum to celebrate Africa Day which is observed throughout Africa on the 25th of May annually. South Africa’s Theme for 2019 edition was “Celebrating 25 Years of Democracy”. Primary schools were identified as target audience and were requested to create work that represent democracy to them. The creations were in the form of poetry, poster presentations, drama or any other art form which the school could choose. Learners were most creative in their presentations and really represented their schools very well!

Members of the Natural Science Department attended the Natural Science Collections Facility Forum held at Goudini Spa from 28 – 31 May. The department was represented by Dr Igor Muratov, Dr Thembeka Nxele, Dr John Midgley, Mr Siyabonga Zamisa, Dr Kirstin Williams and Mr Matabaro Ziganira. The forum provided an opportunity for discussions about collections, access to data, transformation in collections and science communication. It was a very interactive forum with café conversation styled discussions which allowed people to network with staff from other institutions. The Natural Science Collections Facility is a network of South African institutions holding natural science collections, established as part of the Department of Science & Technology’s Research Infrastructure Roadmap and co-ordinated by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI).

Fun activities for the kids this winter holiday at the KZN Museum. Suitable for ages 6 - 13 years. Activities are R 25 per day, from 9am - 11am.

18 June - Make your own Dinosaur fossil necklace and visit the dinosaur gallery to learn all about how dinosaurs became extinct.
19 June - Make a fun kaleidoscope from recycled materials and visit our new plastic pollution display to learn how you can become an ambassador for a greener planet.
20 June - Make your own clay pot while you learn about African pottery.
21 June - Did you know that 2019 is the Year of Fly? You will learn about the importance of flies and make your own green bottle fly using recycled material.

On the 20 October we will be opening a temporary exhibition called the "Shop of Horrors" in our History Gallery. It will be set up inside "Mrs Pepworth's Shop". It is about the strange and macabre history of the Victorians and the little known facts of the everyday life and beliefs during the 1800s. This temporary exhibition will be shown for just one month, so come see but only if you dare! And just in time for Halloween too!#didyouknow #kznmuseum
