𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗭𝗡 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲𝘀, 𝗠𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘀. 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟮𝟵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟯𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸. 𝗔 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀:

I think the ultimate highlight during my time at the Museum was the trip Dai Herbert and I made to Madagascar in May/June 2005. We were invited to go on a collecting trip which comprised travelling down the Mahavavy River between the villages of Kandreho and Sitampiky - a distance of about 120 kms in rubber Zodiac boats. We were able to stop and collect wherever we felt would be a good spot to try.
We collaborated with Mary Cole of the East London Museum and had many memorable field trips to the Eastern and Western Cape. A highlight for me was finding Afrorhytida on the farm Wedgeley just outside the cottage we were staying in - it turned out to be a new species.

On a field trip I found a nudibranch Baeolidia moebii in one of the rock pools, it proved to be a new record for South Africa.
I've always regarded seeing my illustrations for scientific papers appearing in print especially when it's a large paper and has taken many hours to do the illustrations as a highlight.

Africa Month: Rock art of the Groot Winterhoek Mountains

𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵, 𝗞𝗭𝗡 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀. 𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀.

Until recently, the rock art of the Groot Winterhoek Mountains in the southern Cape near Port Elizabeth has remained largely unexplored. In 2013 Ghilraen Laue commenced a project to record and interpret this art with the objective of understanding regional differences in hunter-gatherer rock art in southern Africa. So far, 40 sites have been recorded; ongoing field work suggests that many more sites will be added to this total. At first glance, the imagery looks different from the paintings found in the Drakensberg. Close analysis of the images, however, shows that the underlying symbolism is similar and points to a widely shared worldview amongst the painters across the sub-continent.

𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵: 𝗔 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀

During Africa Month, the KZN Museum celebrates the connections between KZN and the rest of the African continent. We explore these connections through objects in our anthropology collection.

Justine Wintjes and Dimakatso Tlhoaele, along with Jessica Draper from the Centre for Visual Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, devised a project for this year’s postgraduate students in History of Art. Each student gets to choose an object from the Museum collection to research for the entire year.

A single object might seem like a very limited focus, but it contains an infinite amount of information and has a unique story that the students, working like forensic detectives, have to try to uncover.
