The KZN Museum's education team have embarked on various educational in house and outreach projects for the year. For the In-House programme the Museum usually at this time of the year receives many primary schools, grades 4,5 and 6 for lessons on Old Pietermaritzburg History and Victorian, San Hunter-Gatherer and Mapungubwe. While general tours are hugely popular, schools also request to book lessons on Early Africa Farmers, Animal Classification and a host of other topics. 

A wide range of curriculum enrichment lectures are available for ALL grades. Our education staff makes use of specimens, exhibits and talks are also enriched by the use of notes and worksheets. Talks/tours can be designed to suit the educator’s or school's needs.  List of talks and tours offered 

The KZN Museum's education team has embarked on various educational in house and outreach projects for the year. Of particular interest at this time of the year is the Enviro Reach initiative which is an outreach project and covers a wide range of topic in natural sciences. Lessons to various schools include topics like - a lesson on plant structures using a live specimen of spekboom. Learners at various schools participated in completing a worksheet on scientific drawing and labelling of the plant, reiterating the important structures. Learners at the outreach initiatives also participated in making their own seed bombs using clay, (seeds included carrots, green beans, and peas), which can be planted at any time of the year, and even in the most arid of conditions.

Presentations also included a lesson on Inorganic Chemistry specifically targetted to Grade 10 learners, including a demonstration of the water purification filter and a practical on seed bombs where learners interacted in groups.  Other topics covered are indigenous plants and their significance, a practical session on how to make seed bombs using indigenous seeds and the propagation of spekboom and planting of proteas, which is proudly our South African flower.  

The schools that the Museum have visited so far this year include Nomaswazi High School, Thorner Primary School, St Nicholas Diocesan School, Eden College in Durban. 

In celebration of National Library Week the KZN Museum is going to host a book swap in March. The public is invited to drop off any unwanted books that are in good condition to the Museum. We will accept all books - fiction, non-fiction, academic, novels, picture books, cookbooks, children's books, etc. The book swap will be held at the Museum from the 17 - 19 March 2020 (more about that in later posts). You can visit the Museum during Library Week in March to pick up a book of your choice at no cost, and maybe leave something behind that you are no longer reading!
