Congratulations to Dr John Midgley, who has been elected to international scientific bodies.
The museum is excited to announce that Dr John Midgley, Assistant Director of Natural Sciences, has been elected to the council of not one, but two international scientific organizations. At the recent AGM of the Entomological Society of Southern Africa (ESSA), Dr Midgley was elected as one of two Vice Presidents of the Society and at the International Congress of Dipterology he was elected as the Secretary/Treasurer and Africa representative on the Council of the International Congresses of Dipterology.
The ESSA was founded in 1937 and aims to promote all aspects of entomology in Africa and facilitate communication between entomologists, both amateur and professional, on the continent. Dr Midgley will serve as Vice President for the next two years. The Council of the ICDs is primarily tasked with ensuring that Dipterological Congresses (meetings where entomologists share their research on flies) happen every four years, but also with promoting Dipterology internationally. The term for council membership is eight years. The council was formed after the first Dipterology Congress in 1986.
