Celebrating Fifty Years of Archaeology-Remembering Past Staff: Joane Swart

Joané Swart studied archaeology and anthropology at the University of Stellenbosch before completing her master's degree at the University of Cambridge. Part of her research took her to Australia, which ignited her interest in rock art. She joined the museum in 2002 as a research archaeologist in the position of Senior Curator and began working extensively on rock art. She surveyed rock art in the northern and southern uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park and she worked closely with Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife and Amafa aKwaZulu Natali, on issues concerning the management and exhibition of rock art. She left the museum in late 2004 but maintained her academic interest in rock art, writing about sequencing and other aspects. Recently, she completed her doctorate at the University of the Witwatersrand on gender in San rock art.
