The Department of Human Sciences of the KwaZulu-Natal Museum hosted a lively symposium about Game Pass Shelter from 14 to 16 September 2022, which included a day trip to the site. Game Pass is one of the most iconic sites of hunter-gatherer rock paintings in the Drakensberg. It was first mentioned in a tourist guide in 1895 and declared a National Heritage Site in 2020. The site’s imagery has also played a key role in rock art interpretation. We hope to produce a book about Game Pass that examines the site from many different perspectives.

Game Pass Shelter is made up of a row of interconnected overhangs with hundreds of painted figures across four large panels. You’ll find many photographs of the site on the African Rock Art Digital Archive website
