In November 2023, the Entomology Department was privileged to have Dr Daniel Whitmore from the Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart, Germany, visit our collections. Dr Whitmore is a Dipterist (fly specialist) who works on Sarcophagidae – flesh flies. He spent two weeks working on our collection updating identifications and the taxonomy of our Sarcophagidae collection. His visit was funded by a Knowledge Interchange and Collaboration (KIC) grant from the National Research Foundation (NRF). These grants allow institutions in South Africa to get international experts to come to South Africa to provide their expertise where these do not exist in the country. Dr Whitmore gave a talk at the museum on the state of Sarcophagidae in the Afrotropics. His talk was very interesting and a number of the staff commented that they didn’t know there were so many types of flies! This opportunity has been beneficial to both Dr Whitmore and the museum – our collections have benefited from his expertise and he has been able to borrow material that is of interest for his research. We are grateful to the NRF for the grant and Dr Whitmore for his willingness to visit our museum and share his expertise.
