South African Living treasures are part of our heritage. The KwaZulu-Natal Museum in collaboration with grade 7 learners from Dindi Primary School celebrated heritage day by “honouring the South African human living treasures”, which was the theme for this year’s heritage month. Learners from Dindi Primary School wore different South African traditional attires and 5 of them did presentations on different attires they were wearing. They explained the meaning of the colours in different attire they were wearing and highlighted the relationship between the colours used by South African cultural groups and the South African national flag. Red stands for blood, white for peace, black for black people, green for vegetation, yellow for gold (wealth) and blue for the sky and the ocean.
The KZN Museum's Heritage, Symbols & Cultural History intern, Siboniso Gcumisa, narrated a story of the Sagole Baobab tree which is indigenous to South Africa and found in the Limpopo province. It is over three thousand years old and the largest in South Africa. He also shared very interesting poems with the learners, motivating them to look forward to the future with a positive attitude and respect, and not forgetting who they are and where they come from. He ended with the important message to the learners, to respect nature because it has a very strong relationship with its people.
