Gavin did his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in archaeology at the University of the Witwatersrand. He joined the museum in April 1986 to work on the Inanda Dam archaeological project. His research focuses on the archaeology, history, anthropology and material culture of African agriculturist communities of the last 2000 years.
