The Natal Museum
publishes two SAPSE-listed journals: African
Invertebrates and Southern African
Humanities. The journals evolved from the original Natal Museum
journal, Annals of the Natal Government
Museum, which was first published in 1906. "Government" was dropped from the title after the Union of South
Africa was established in 1910. The museum established the Natal Museum Journal of Humanities in 1989 to accommodate the
increasing volume of publications by museum staff on archaeology, anthropology
and history. Previously such articles had been published in the Annals. The Annals continued its uninterrupted run with natural science
articles only. In 2001, the current names of the two museum journals were
adopted. Volume numbers continued through the name changes.
Southern African Humanities is a medium for human science and heritage research of an
archaeological, anthropological and historical nature. African Invertebrates carries articles on the taxonomy,
systematics, biogeography, biology, ecology, conservation and palaeontology of
African invertebrates.
