Myriapoda

The Natal Museum has the largest collection of identified millipedes (approx. 2000) in Southern Africa, and includes over 200 type specimens. Local and foreign experts such as Dr Michelle Hamer (South Africa), Dr Richard Hoffman (USA), Dr Sergei Golovatch (Russia), Dr Rowland Shelley (USA), Dr Otto Kraus (Germany) and the late Dr R. F. Lawrence have worked on the collection. Mr Guy Redman (Curator) is currently working on millipede taxonomy and biogeography, concentrating on the Harpagophoridae. A substantial collection of centipedes (approx. 800) and onychophorans (approx. 100) is housed with the Arachnology collection. The number in brackets represent the number of identified and catalogued specimen lots. There are in addition, unidentified specimens.
