Lower Invertebrata
This comprises the Oligochaeta (earthworm) collection largely built up by Dr D. Plisko. To date there are in excess of 3700 specimen lots and the collection continues to grow as new material is collected and donated by various sources such as farmers associated with the No Till Club, Breeders of vermiculture, Biodiversity Division of KZN Conservation Service, University of Natal Pietermaritzburg researchers, and colleagues from the Museum. Most of the material donated includes new species and this is to be expected as Dr Plisko is the only earthworm taxonomist in the region. The collection is arguably the largest of Southern African earthworms in Africa.
