Recently the KZN Museum welcomed 50 Life Science educators for a day workshop on
Human Evolution. The poorly understood topic of evolution forms an important part of the
grade 10, 11 and 12 curriculums.
The facilitators, Dr Igor Muratov (Department of Natural Sciences, KwaZulu Natal Museum) and Ms Ghilraen Laue (Department of Human Sciences, KwaZulu Natal Museum), led the educators through the story of life from the Big Bang to the shared African origins of all humanity.
The facilitators worked to improve understanding of the topic as well as help educators with ideas and hints on how to get the information across to learners. The workshop included lectures, tours of the relevant sections of the museum and discussion periods for educators to share tips and problems in the teaching of this topic. The feedback from the educators was positive with nearly all participants saying they would recommend the workshop to fellow Life Sciences educators. The museum hopes to be able to make this workshop a regular event.
